It’s been awhile since we last visited the attributes of God. Last time, we finished off a little mini-series looking at the “omni” character qualities. We learned that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, which put together equal one thing: God is sovereign. He is Lord over everything and completely in control. He does not need help and is never taken off guard by circumstances. He knows all things and has complete power over all things. He is God.
This is just a sample of all that we discovered. God is awesome, powerful, majestic, and oh, so magnificent. We could never attempt to fully grasp all that God is. However, as we continue to try and wrap our minds around the greatness of God, let’s add another mind blowing concept.
Who is God? God is WITH US.

“‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’
(which means, God with us).”
~Matthew 1:23
(which means, God with us).”
~Matthew 1:23
Remember, God is holy, all powerful, all knowing, everywhere, and sovereign. He is above all creation and greater than we could ever imagine. However, that same God wanted to be with us. The One who is supreme chose to humble Himself, become like His creation, and eventually die for us.
Think of all that we’ve learned about God so far. From what you know about God and His character, can you believe that He would become like us? The supreme authority, omnipotent God humbled Himself and became like His creation. Why? Because He wants to be with us. He wants to dwell with us. And He accomplished this through His Son, Jesus Christ. Immanuel. God with us.
What a novel concept!
While we generally celebrate and talk about this at Christmas time, it’s important to remember throughout the year. The incarnation didn’t just impact Christmas, and the significance of the manger isn’t reserved for the month of December. Rather, Jesus’ coming rocked history and forever impacted the future of mankind. The significance of what happened that fateful night ought to resound in hearts not only at Christmas, but all year long. For our God is not a far off God, but is near. With us, in us.
We should never overlook the importance of this concept. The Creator of the universe is here with us. The just Judge and righteous King is in our midst. He chose to become like us that we might be able to live with Him throughout eternity. Oh, praise the Lord! Immanuel. God with us.
