Have you ever wanted to be taller, shorter, or slimmer; have blonde hair, brown, black, wavy, straight, curly, thick, or thin; wished you were smarter, more athletic, etcetera? I know I have. At some point in life, everyone has wished for some different attribute of themselves than they have. It’s human nature. We are never satisfied with what we have, but are always looking at others and comparing. This is especially true during the impressionable teen years. At this age, we are transitioning from childhood to adulthood, and as we navigate through this awkward season we are even more prone to dissatisfaction with the way we look, act, and speak as we compare ourselves with those around us. But it doesn’t have to be that way!
What freedom and joy we would have if we broke out of the cruel cycle of comparison and experienced the self-confidence of being content with who we are! The question is, how do we attain this contentment when the world is constantly telling us how we should look and act and that we don’t line up? The answer is found, as are all answers to life, in the Bible. So the first attribute we’re going to look at in this Who is God? series is God as the Perfect Creator.
When you open the Bible, the first thing you’ll read is:
When you open the Bible, the first thing you’ll read is:
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth... And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good.”
~Genesis 1:1, 31
~Genesis 1:1, 31
So the first thing the Bible does is establish the fact that God is the Creator of all things. It goes on to further explain how God created the universe and that all of it was good. Very good. The eternal, triune God declared the work of His hands to be very good! That includes us! We are the crowning work of God’s creation and the only beings created in His own image. Think about that. You are created in the very image or likeness of the Maker of the universe! And He views you as very good!
Now it is true that this was before man’s fall, however, the Great Designer still sees you as His prized creation.

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.”
~Psalm 139:14-15
~Psalm 139:14-15
The God of the universe took the time to uniquely fashion and form you while you were in your mother’s womb! Before you were even born, He had predestined how many days you would live and when and where you would live them. You are fearfully and wonderfully made because God personally crafted YOU! And if God took the time to hand craft you in your mother’s womb, do you think He would have accidentally chosen the wrong mother? Or do you think that while He was writing every single day you would live, He inadvertently chose the wrong time period? No!!! Nothing about your life is by chance! Not the way you look, not the parents you have, nor the time period you live in. NOTHING! For everything the LORD Almighty does is for a purpose, and that includes creating you. God does not make mistakes.
“...his work is perfect…” ~Deuteronomy 32:4
But do not mistake this to mean that your life will be perfect. It won’t be. Because of mankind’s desire to be like their Creator, we live in a world ravaged by sin and the result is suffering, pain, and brokenness. Nevertheless, our God is all about the business of healing, restoring, and re-creating. For He did not intend this world to be tainted and separated from Him by sin but to be a place where man can know and walk closely with his Creator.
Therefore, let us praise God and give Him glory for everything He has made. And let us revel in the fact that we are uniquely created in the very image of the perfect God, being confident that the Divine Maker has fashioned us just the way we are for a specific reason and purpose. So let us declare with the psalmist David,
